UNIVERSITI PUTRA MALAYSIA AND KYUSHU INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY JOINT SYMPOSIUM 2025



Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) are pleased to announce the 13th International Symposium on Applied Engineering and Sciences (SAES2025), which will be held in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (Serdang Campus), Selangor, Malaysia, from 10-11 November 2025. SAES2025 is an international forum for presentations and interactions in the current and emerging areas of Applied Engineering and Sciences. It also provides a unique platform for researchers, students, scientists, and engineers to share their experiences and views on their latest research breakthroughs. The theme for SAES2025 is 'Planetary Health for a Sustainable Future'. In addition to the technical sessions, SAES2025 features plenary speeches, exhibitions, and poster sessions.
SAES2025 welcomes participation from both presenters and non-presenters. All interested individuals are encouraged to join and benefit from the academic discussions and networking opportunities offered during the symposium.

Meet Our Keynote Speaker
YBhg. Prof. Emerita Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail
Vice-Chancellor and CEO
International Medical University, Malaysia

Prof. Emerita Datuk Dr. Asma Ismail is the Immediate Past President of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and former Science Advisor to the Prime Minister. As of August 2024, she is Vice-Chancellor and CEO of IMU University, Pro-Chancellor of MAIWP International University, and Chair of the Planetary Health Action Plan for Malaysia. She holds a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Nevada, and honorary doctorates from Glasgow, Keele, and Kyoto University of Foreign Studies.
She made history as the first female Vice-Chancellor of USIM and USM, first woman Director-General of Higher Education, and Malaysia’s first female Science Advisor. She has held key academic, scientific, and policymaking roles, including membership on various global science and education boards such as the Inter Academy Partnership and the International Science Council.
Dr. Asma developed the WHO-endorsed typhoid diagnostic test TYPHIDOT and holds 16 commercialized patents. She has received over 270 awards, published 130+ papers, and delivered 90+ keynotes globally. She was named a Forbes Asia Top 50 Over 50 Woman in 2023 and National Academic Laureate in 2022. Her contributions shaped Malaysia’s research universities and education blueprints, including the ongoing 2026–2035 plan.

Meet Our Plenary Speakers
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yoshito Ando
Kyushu Institute of Technology, Fukuoka, Japan

Dr. Yoshito Ando is currently an associate professor in the Department of Life Science and Systems Engineering at the Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering, Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech), Fukuoka, Japan. His research focuses on sustainable materials, especially the extraction and functionalization of cellulose and lignin from unused lignocellulosic biomass such as bamboo. Dr. Ando has spearheaded various research projects and published more than 150 scientific papers (h-index 30, FWCI 1.7(2022-2025)) and eight granted patents. He is also the director of MSSC (Kyutech satellite base for education and research in Malaysia) and the Collaborative Research Centre for Green Materials on Environmental Technology in Kyutech.

YBhg. Prof. Ts. Dr. Nurfadhlina Mohd Sharef
Universiti Putra Malaysia

Prof. Ts. Dr. Nurfadhlina Mohd Sharef is Professor of Computer Science at Universiti Putra Malaysia and Chief Digital Officer. She earned her PhD in Intelligent Systems from the University of Bristol, MSc in Software Engineering (UPM), and BIT (UKM). Her research spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, text mining, and e-learning. She has served as Deputy Director at IDEC and CADe, and is a Senior IEEE member. Widely recognized for AI expertise, she has contributed to APEC, UNESCO, IEEE, and Malaysia’s AI roadmap. She has secured multimillion-ringgit grants, published 59 cited journals, and trained globally on AI in education.
